Mishmar Haemek

Ulpan Program

Mishmar Ha’emek hosts two five-month Ulpan programs a year. Each program numbers 25 students
(Ulpanist, plural: Ulpanistim) in the ages between 18 to 30 year.

The week is divided into three days of Hebrew language studies alternating with two days of work in the
kibbutz. Weekends are usually off, except for one Friday’s work duty a month.

Studies:
Our Ulpan has two study levels: beginners (aleph) and advanced (beit) of up to 15 students each. At the beginning of the Ulpan, students will take a placement evaluation in order to assign each student to the most appropriate class. Our teachers are professionally trained and highly experienced in teaching new immigrants.
Classes begin at 8 AM and continue until 3 PM, with short breaks during the day and one longer break for lunch.
An examination will conclude the program after which each Ulpanist will receive a certificate from the Israeli Education Ministry.
We take the studies very seriously and all lessons are compulsory. Absence is allowed only after approval of the Ulpan manager.

Work:
Working in the kibbutz is the ultimate way to get to know the people and kibbutz life from the inside. Work also gives the opportunity to exercise and improve the Hebrew that has been acquired during classes.
Jobs are assigned according to the kibbutz’ demands, efforts will be made to take the Ulpanist’s wishes into consideration. Working places can be for instance: dining room, kitchen, laundry,  garage etc.
Working hours vary from place to place.
Work is mandetory and should be taken seriously. Each absence should be coordinated with the Ulpan manager and with the working place. The Ulpanistim will arrive at work in time, will be dressed decently and will do their work properly.

Staff:
The Ulpan staff is dedicated and will do everything possible to help with bureaucracy, studies and recommendations for a future life in Israel. The staff contains of three Hebrew, English, Spanish and Dutch speaking women. We are present during the day and the afternoon and in special occasions also during the evening.
